Donald Trump has released a letter written by former First Lady Melania Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a move widely seen as an attempt to counter negative media coverage of his recent summit in Alaska.
U.S.A president, who has bristled at portrayals of the meeting as a diplomatic win for Moscow, published the letter on his social media platform Truth Social late Saturday night. In the note, Melania Trump praised the “importance of dialogue between great nations” and expressed hope that “the spirit of cooperation fostered in Alaska will bring stability for future generations.”
Trump accompanied the letter with a blistering post attacking the press for what he called “fake news lies” about the summit. “The dishonest media wants you to believe Putin ran circles around me,” Trump wrote. “The truth is, America was respected again, and Melania’s beautiful letter shows the goodwill and strength we brought to Alaska.”
Critics, however, dismissed the gesture as political theater. Democratic lawmakers accused Trump of using his wife to deflect from concerns that he had been overly receptive to Putin’s praise during their bilateral talks. “It doesn’t matter how many letters are published—what matters is whether Trump gave away leverage,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA).
Meanwhile, Kremlin officials confirmed receipt of Melania’s letter but declined to comment on its contents. Russian state media hailed the note as evidence of “warm personal ties” between the Trump and Putin families.
The episode marks the latest twist in a summit that has drawn scrutiny across Washington and European capitals, with allies anxious about Trump’s willingness to compromise on security guarantees for Ukraine.
